Ben Carlson Foundation Memorial Paddle Marks 10 Years with 30-Mile Journey

NEWPORT BEACH, CA – October 15, 2025 – On the open waters between Catalina Island and Newport Beach, dedication met purpose as Economos DeWolf associate Matt Economos joined dozens of paddlers in the 10th annual Ben Carlson Foundation Memorial Paddle. Covering 30 miles across the Pacific, the event raised more than $400,000 to support ocean safety, scholarships, and community initiatives in honor of fallen Newport Beach lifeguard Ben Carlson.

Participation in the Catalina Paddle is hard-earned. Each paddler, including Economos, completed three separate 15-mile qualifying paddles at a four-mile-per-hour pace before joining the group crossing. The 30-mile journey is designed as a true test of endurance, teamwork, and spirit.

For participants, the paddle was as much about purpose as it was about endurance. “Every mile carried meaning,” said Matt Economos. “We paddled for each other, for our community, and for Bens enduring legacy.”

Among those sharing the challenge on the water was Newport Beach Mayor Joe Stapleton, who encouraged Economos to take part in this years event. “This paddle reflects the best of Newport Beach and its surrounding cities: neighbors coming together for a cause bigger than themselves,” said Stapleton. “Paddling alongside Matt and the rest of the group was a reminder that service, in any form, keeps our community strong.”
The Ben Carlson Foundation was established in honor of Newport Beach lifeguard Ben Carlson, who lost his life 11 years ago while rescuing a swimmer in distress. His sacrifice marked the first time a Newport Beach lifeguard had died in the line of duty, and his legacy continues to inspire.

Today, the Foundation carries forward Bens spirit of service and courage by funding scholarships for students, supporting ocean safety initiatives, and partnering with community organizations that make Southern California stronger. From educating young people about water safety to providing resources for first responders, the Foundation has touched thousands of lives and built a lasting culture of giving.

The Catalina Paddles 10-year milestone highlights the staying power of Bens story and the dedication of those who keep his name alive. For Economos, it was both a physical challenge and a deeply personal commitment to community impact.
