Dear IEC Members and Community,
Last night we executed the most important event in our organization’s history, with one of the largest turnouts on record! We took dead aim on a topic that is one of the most paramount issues facing our nation (Social Emotional Learning) SEL.
Chapman University and the International Executive Council (IEC) partnered up tonight to present a power panel of business and education experts to explain the importance of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and how Emotional Intelligence (EQ) can be learned by everyone and lead to greater life success.
Among our thought leaders were:
- Adam Coughran, President of Safe Kids Inc.
- Erica Buxton, CEO of EQtainment
- Todd Schmidt, EdD, Principal of Harbor View Elementary
- Monica Utley, Executive Director at Tilly’s Life Center
This discussion covered how teachers and schools are positively impacting student achievement in the classroom and on the playground with critical social emotional skills using strategic, researched-based approaches that empower students to reach their full potential. We discussed how a lack of SEL skills, such as empathy, leads to bullying and isolation and an increase in violent acts on school campuses. We also explored how SEL is being incorporated into already busy classrooms using fun and simple methods and how parents can reinforce these critical life skills with their children at home.
After the keynote address and panel, IEC members got an opportunity to have a tour of the brand new Keck Science and Engineering School at Chapman University, followed by a holiday reception, featuring a talented, live Chapman University student pianist.
Sean Conrad, founding member, IEC also introduced the framework of Growth Councils for our organization, we are excited to launch this new initiative in January of 2019, to compliment an action-packed year of events and global travel coming up.
Together we thrive!
