Celebrating Our Commitment to Depression Research & Welcoming Diego A. Pizzagalli

We are thrilled to share an incredible milestone in our pursuit of pioneering research within the School of Biological Sciences. Professor Diego A. Pizzagalli, PhD, joins us as the inaugural director of the Noel Drury, M.D. Institute for Translational Depression Discoveries.

Professor Pizzagalli’s appointment marks a significant moment in our ongoing dedication to advancing understanding and treatments for major depression. His esteemed leadership, garnered from his tenure at prestigious institutions like Harvard University and McLean Hospital, underscores his commitment to unraveling the complexities of mood disorders.

We are particularly proud to share that the school’s discussions with the late philanthropist Audrey Steele Burnand, spanning over a decade, led to the establishment of this $55 million estate gift, enabling the creation of the Institute. This generous support demonstrates the culmination of our collective efforts within the School of Biological Sciences and reinforces our commitment to groundbreaking research in depression studies.

Professor Pizzagalli’s arrival in January 2025 heralds a new era of collaboration and innovation within our school and across campus. His role in guiding faculty recruitment, steering cutting-edge research endeavors and fostering interdisciplinary partnerships will further elevate the school’s reputation as a hub for transformative scientific discoveries.

Please join us in extending our warmest welcome to Professor Diego A. Pizzagalli. His leadership will undoubtedly catalyze our collective mission to unravel the mysteries of depression and pave the way for more effective treatments.
